Cairns Rectangular Stadium Needs Study

Council has been investigating the need for a rectangular pitch stadium for the region, capable of hosting local, national and international events for rugby league, rugby union, football (soccer) and community events.
A recent study has looked into possible events, the level of demand, preferences and options, potential economic impact, as well as likely costs. The draft report presents potential development options for Council consideration.

Stadium study invites public feedback
A draft report into the need for a major rectangular stadium has been released for public comment.
Cairns Regional Council has been investigating the need for a rectangular pitch stadium for the region, capable of hosting local, national and international events for rugby league, rugby union, football (soccer) and community events.
A comprehensive needs study has been completed by Coffey Sport and Leisure, following extensive investigation, consultation and analysis relating to:
- Possible events that could be hosted at a rectangular pitch stadium in Cairns
- Level of demand within the local and regional community for such events
- Preferences and options to meet the identified needs
- Indicative economic impact that a stadium and events would deliver to the region
- Likely capital and operational cost estimates
"This report and subsequent public feedback will provide guidance to Council as to the most appropriate options for progressing the study," Mayor Val Schier said.
"All members of the public, including key stakeholders, have the opportunity to provide comment in relation to the report until Sunday 23 October 2011.
